Midwifery Programs

The International Institute for Health Care Professionals currently offers two midwifery programs: the three-year direct entry midwifery program and the two-year program modified for nurses.

3-Year Direct Entry Midwifery Program

Program credit hours: 112 credits
Program Delivery: Residential
Credential Awarded: Associate Degree

Program Description

The Direct Entry Midwifery program at IIHCP is a three-year Associate Degree program that prepares professional midwives for independent practice. This program is designed to meet the educational needs of the student who enrolls with no prior midwifery or nursing education. Program graduates qualify for national certification as CPMs and midwifery licensure in the state of Florida. Licensed Midwives provide prenatal care, skilled birthing services, postpartum and newborn care in the community setting, including in birth centers, clinics and home birth practices.

This program emphasizes assessment and care in the low-risk pregnancy in the out-of-hospital setting. This Midwifery Core Curriculum is 112 credit hours over three years.

The program meets the requirements for accreditation by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools and the Florida Commission for Independent Education.  The curriculum is constructed around and meets both the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) requirements for a basic beginning midwife and the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) Core Competencies. Upon graduation the student will be eligible to take the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) certification exam, and practice as Florida Licensed Midwives.

2-Year Midwifery Program Modified For Nurses

Program clock hours: 1455 hours (2 years)
Program Delivery: Residential
Credential Awarded: Diploma

Florida’s Midwifery Practice Act allows for Advanced Standing to be granted for students with prior nursing education. Those entering with an RN or LPN can complete the Midwifery Program in 2 years. For those with prior nursing or midwifery education, coursework will be assessed on an individual basis and credit granted where appropriate. If credit is granted, both education time and tuition will be reduced proportionately. “In no case shall the training be reduced to a period of less than 2 years” F.S.467.009(2).
